What causes frizz and how can I prevent it?
Frizzy hair is related to the amount of moisture in the air: too little or too much can causes frizz to appear. When humidity is high, the water in the air penetrates the hair strand and causes it to swell, appearing frizzy. When the air is too dry—which is common with recycled air, like on an airplane—hair gets dried out, causing frizz.
To battle frizz caused by humidity, rub Smooth Serum onto your hands and run them along the surface of the hair. If your frizz is really troublesome, try Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Extra Strength Serum.
For frizz caused by dryness, shampoo as usual and use Smooth Conditioner or Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Conditioner. If you need more protection, add Pro-V Smoothing Frizz Defense Crème —don't rinse it out before styling.
When you fly, apply a small amount of Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Ultra Smoothing Balm in-flight to help keep hair smooth.
What can I do when my hair becomes tangled or matted together?
Tangled hair is very common, and can be made worse by combing or brushing while hair is wet. There is more friction in wet hair because water makes the hair strand swell. If this occurs, you may need more conditioning. Try using a shampoo and conditioner with a higher level of conditioning than what you're currently using, or a specialty treatment for additional conditioning. If your hair length is past the shoulders, be sure to use more conditioner on the ends.
Severe tangling or matting can also occur when hair shafts with a rough surface are rubbed together. This is more likely to occur if hair has been piled on top of the head and scrubbed during shampooing. To detangle hair, follow these steps carefully:
1. DO NOT WET HAIR or try to rinse! Apply a conditioner (don't shampoo first) directly to tangled, DRY hair.
2. Using a fine-toothed comb, gently comb hair starting at the BOTTOM, and move slowly upward.
Take your time, allowing the conditioner to penetrate the matted area. Once you've detangled to a reasonable point, rinse hair and reapply conditioner as directed.
Another severe form of matting is sometimes referred to as "bird nesting." Bird nesting always happens suddenly and may not be from any one factor. Possible contributing factors include: Hair that is overprocessed from coloring, perming, chemical damage, or damage resulting from styling, heat implements, back brushing, or teasing. Hair then rapidly starts to break down and as it does, the friction rises and the hairs begin to tangle together easily.
If the process recommended above does not solve your problem, we recommend you seek help from your stylist or salon professional. They can best determine a treatment plan.
What causes damage such as split ends?
It is all too easy to fall into the trap of blaming the last product put onto the hair as the single cause of a problem. Much more often, hair condition is lost as a result of a combination of mistreatments over a long period.
There are several things that can cause damage to your hair, resulting in split ends.
• Chemical treatments such as perms and coloring
• Mechanical damage from hair brushes or combs—even frequent use of clips and rubber bands.
• Heat damage from curling irons, hot rollers and blow-dryers over time.
• Environmental damage can result from exposure to the sun, weather and swimming.
Usually hair damage takes place gradually, stage by stage, as follows:
• the hair is weakened
• the cuticle gets lifted from the hair
• partial removal of cuticle scales
• the hair splits, causing split ends to appear
• the hair breaks
Long hair is more likely to have damage than short hair, because it has been exposed to more damage. It is also harder for the natural oils of the scalp to reach the ends to help protect them.
Using conditioners and styling products can help minimize the look of damage and help protect hair from more damage. Want to know how to prevent damage?
1. Keep the ends of your hair trimmed frequently (every 4-6 weeks). Damage is usually more prominent at the ends of hair.
2. Be careful when combing, brushing or styling hair, especially when hair is wet. We recommend using a wide tooth comb when hair is wet.
3. Let hair air dry when possible.
4. Use Pantene Pro-V conditioners to help protect the hair from daily exposure to damage. Click here to see our Conditioners.
How often should I wash my hair?
There isn't a "right" answer to this question. Your physical activities, your use of styling products and your hair type will usually determine how often you wash your hair. If washing every day makes your hair too dry, try every other day or every third day. Or, you may have very oily hair that needs washing more than once a day. If you condition when you shampoo, it could be that you need to shampoo daily but need to adjust the level of conditioning.
Light conditioners are available in our Full & Thick or Sheer Volume Collections. High conditioning levels can be found in our Moisture Renewal or Restoratives collections. Find the products that are best for you.
Can your products make my hair grow faster?
Wouldn't it be great if there was a magic solution to growing hair fast! Our hair grows between 1/4 and 1/2 inch per month and hair-care products cannot speed up the growth rate. Our hair-care lineup can help improve the look of your hair, allowing you to go longer between trims. And that is something—longer hair for a longer time!
What causes hair to fall out?
There are many reasons why individuals experience hair loss.
Some hair loss is normal and is a continuous process. Hair goes through a cycle of growth and then falls out so it can be replaced by a new hair. People normally lose between 50 and 100 hairs each day.
Things such as combing, brushing and shampooing help the removal of hair on the verge of falling out, to make room for the new hair to grow.
Excessive hair loss can happen as a result of:
• hormonal changes
• acute and chronic illnesses
• infections
• trauma and medication
If you are experiencing extensive hair loss, you may want to talk with your doctor or dermatologist.
How can I save time and get my hair to dry quicker?
If getting up earlier is out of the question, try these tips:
1. Shampoo and condition your hair first thing when you shower, then try to keep your hair out of the line of water while you finish. (Yes, we're serious).
2. When you are ready to leave the shower, run your hands over your head to try to move the water to the ends of your hair, then squeeze the ends to get out the excess water.
3. Wrap your hair in an absorbent towel for 5 minutes. After removing the towel, take a few very absorbent paper towels (like Bounty) and pat them on your hair.
4. Let your hair air-dry while you brush your teeth, put on your makeup and clothes, and eat your breakfast.
5. When you start drying your hair, dry the sides and back first. These areas take longer to dry, so when you are ready to do the front of your hair (if you have bangs) it will be almost completely dry.
6. Shower the night before. You can always regain control in the morning by misting your hair with a spray water bottle.
How do shampoos give hair a curly, smooth or more volumized style?
Most shampoos and conditioners, except clarifying shampoos, leave ingredients behind on the hair that can work for you or against you. That's why it's important to find the right product for your hair. Each of our hair-care products is specially formulated to give you the hairstyle you're looking for:
• If you want volume and your hair is feeling weighed down or limp, our Full & Thick Shampoo is one of our shampoos that has the least amount of conditioner left behind after shampooing.

• In addition to our end-benefit shampoos, Pantene Pro-V Restoratives products are designed to help with common hair issues. This premium collection has high levels of conditioners to help protect your hair.

Help! I have static in my hair. What should I do?
We know it is hard to be at your best when your hair is not. The good news is we think the answer is simple. It sounds like your hair needs conditioning. Our hair is robbed of moisture every day by things such as weather and even the way we style it.
If you are using a conditioner, you may try leaving it on for a few extra minutes before rinsing. Make sure you condition the ends of your hair. You may need a product with more conditioning benefits than the one you are currently using. Find the product right for you now.
What can I do for dull, lackluster hair?
Give your hair a daily dose of shine with
Ice Shine Shampoo and
Conditioner. For deep conditioning that will give you softness as well as shine, use
Pro-V Smoothing Split-End Prevention once a week.
How can I make thin/thinning hair look full?
Various factors—including heredity, hormones and diet—can contribute to fine or thinning hair, but shampoos and conditioners can help give your hair a boost. Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Shampoo and Full & Thick Conditioner, with pro-vitamins, help make fragile hair strong against damage. Add fullness by applying Full & Thick Mousse or Full & Thick Extra Fullness Gel, and drying hair upside down.
Also, some kinds of hair cuts help give the appearance of fuller hair. Ask your stylist for guidance.
What can I do to prevent flyaways?
Dry air, static electricity, and friction can cause your hair to stick up in every direction, especially during the winter months.
Moisture Renewal Shampoo and
Conditioner system helps hydrate hair and protect against dryness and static, while a smoothing layer of
Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Extra Strength Serum can help hair lie down and stay smooth throughout the day.
My hair looks so oily—help!
When hair follicles release an excessive amount of the natural protein sebum, hair can look flat, oily and greasy. Make sure to shampoo hair every day with
Classic Care Shampoo, massaging into the roots and down the hair shaft. Another habit that may increase the appearance of oily hair is frequent grooming. Combing and brushing aid in the movement of sebum from the scalp down the hair shaft, so refrain from handling hair as much as possible.
What can I do to make my color last longer?
No matter how permanent your hair color claims to be, all hair color will fade with time. The sun, air, and harsh shampoos all contribute to a lackluster shade.
Start with a semi-permanent rather than a permanent hair color system. Semi-permanents are far gentler than permanent dyes and are designed to fade over time, allowing you to replenish your color sooner without causing as much damage.
The use shampoos and conditioners that are designed for the maintenance of hair color. Pantene's Pro-V Expressions collection includes shampoos and conditioner systems designed to help keep your color-treated hair looking rich, true and vibrant. There's a shade for every hair color.
How can I get rid of dandruff?
The condition of your scalp can be affected by things like stress, hormonal imbalances and diet. Dandruff—which shows up as white flakes of skin—is chronic, meaning it can come back if left unchecked. So don't neglect the problem! Dandruff can be kept under control with a regular hair care regimen that includes a shampoo with an effective anti-dandruff ingredient. Use
Classic Care Pyrithione Zinc Anti-Dandruff 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner to control flaking associated with dandruff. For African-American hair, use
Pro-V Relaxed & Natural Anti-Dandruff Shampoo on a regular basis. Its formula with essential oils moisturizes the scalp to alleviate the itching associated with dandruff.
