How do curls form?

Curl is determined in part by the shape of your follicle—if it’s curved you get curly hair, if not, you get straight hair. Deep inside the follicle is the hair bulb. The type of curl you get can be determined by the way individual hairs grow out of these bulbs.
 
While every strand twists as it grows, the number of twists determines the amount of curl you have. Hair that twists many times over produces tight ringlets, while hair with no to very slight twisting will be straight. Hair with a moderate number of twists looks like loose waves.

Curly hair needs special care because it can be prone to looking dry and/or dull. That’s because hair’s natural oils have to work harder to reach the ends of a curl vs. a straight hair.
