Providing Health & Hope
The lack of safe drinking water plagues the globe, causing illness and even death. Almost a billion people do not have access to clean, healthy water, with 1.4 million children under age 5 dying every year due to diarrheal diseases caused by contaminated water. When P&G learned these facts, they stepped up to help.
In 2004, P&G joined forces with a diverse network of organizations to create the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW). This non-profit program helps provide clean drinking water to children all over the world. The center of the program is the PUR Purifier of Water packet, a P&G invention developed in partnership with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A PUR packet is a miraculous powdered mixture that removes pathogenic microorganisms and suspended matter from contaminated water. In less than 30 minutes potentially deadly water is transformed to something clean and drinkable. It is much smaller and easier to ship than plastic water bottles, making it possible to help many people in the developing world and in times of natural disasters.
P&G supports the CSDW Program broadly from technical advice and manufacturing facilities to human resources and advocacy, investing more than $25 million toward clean water. By joining forces with global relief organizations including AmeriCares, CARE, PSI, and World Vision, they have provided more than two billion liters of clean drinking water, preventing over 85 million days of diarrheal disease.
In 2010, Pantene hair care committed to supporting the P&G CSDW Program, adding further support to help bring clean and healthy drinking water to children and their families in developing countries who need it most.
