What Causes Frizzy Hair?

Frizzy hair is caused by humidity. Sadly, most hair is not smooth in its natural state, but with the right hair care products, blow-dryers, and hairstyling products, hair can be smoothed into a variety of defined styles.

Ever wonder what’s going on inside your hair when you style it so that it holds it shape? Hairstyling arranges each hair strand's internal temporary bond, known as hydrogen bonds, into the uniform pattern required to achieve a smooth style. Cool, huh? Moisture, the great enemy of smoothness, can rearrange this pattern very quickly. In humid conditions, there is a higher water-vapor content in the air, which disrupts the hairstyling bonds and returns hair to its natural pattern, which for most of us means frizzy hair.

Damaged hair makes frizz worse, as it results in little scrapes and holes uplifting the cuticle, which allow moisture to move in and out of the strand more freely, making hair less smooth.

But all hope is not lost! We’ve been working nonstop to discover solutions to help you understand what causes frizzy hair, and we’ve incorporated these solutions into developing our hair care products—from shampoo to conditioner to treatments and stylers. In fact, you could say we’re a little obsessed. But that’s a good thing... for your hair!
